Booth #1119, #1121

Artist Bio:
My artwork takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues as they relate to the black experience. In my work, I deconstruct the American dream. Having engaged subjects as diverse as the civil rights movement, hip hop, jazz, sports and urban landscapes, my work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. Often times these themes are approached in a whimsical manner, and are often embellished with the implication of texture. The color blue combined with a trademark facial expression suggests notions of calmness and complete presence in the moment, and formally unifies the work. Although there may not always be material similarities between the different projects they are linked by recurring formal concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials and the forms of the work. Each project often consists of multiple works, often in acrylics. A range of different media may however be used, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production, through life and observation, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work. Levi as an artist isn’t in search of the perfect mark or the perfect color mixture to interpret subjects. As an artist Levi enjoys loosely interpreting form and bringing the viewer along for the ride by allowing every stroke, every action to remain as a part of the layered construction of the final image. Texture is a trademark element of Levi’s work as he enjoys merging and inserting hints of color to interpret value and form
