Artist Bio:
Chris Johnson
Contemporary Abstract Expressionism

Chris Johnson is a self-taught artist from Nyack, NY. His painting style is contemporary abstract expressionism, working in the oil medium. Chris’s work is inspired by significant periods of his life – meaningful experiences, struggles and a personal crisis, which led him to a new spiritual way of life, discovering his true self and purpose. Through his artwork, Chris is telling his story of emotional and spiritual pain, lack of identity, hopelessness and fear to one of hope, faith and freedom.

Chris’s work reveals a journey from darkness to light. Tapping into key life moments, he uses ideas, spiritual principles and beliefs that reflect his path to freedom from a spiritual bottom in 2010. His experiences, spirituality and recovery serve as the foundation of his work – allowing him to contrast his pain and struggles to tell a story of hope and courage. Through the use of vibrant and bold color palettes, precise line work and meticulous blending; Chris seeks to create a thoughtful, positive and engaging message – expressed in his own contemporary abstract style. Shapes and spatial forms play a central role in his works that naturally unfold during the creative process, evoking a spiritual and healing quality. Using his story as a creative platform provides an outlet to express his feelings, a means to heal while trying to inspire hope and to help others.

After 22 years in advertising and branding, Chris walked away from corporate life to pursue his true passion and dream of being an artist. The combination of his life experiences, a new spiritual path, self-discovery and encouragement from those close to him, Chris overcome his fear of being true to himself and his creative nature.

In the fall of 2017, Chris committed to pursuing his dream of being a working artist. He devoted himself to improving his craft and developing a collection of works to show. Additionally, he spent significant time learning about the art industry. In April 2018, Chris took his first formal step as an artist by opening an Etsy shop. His work can also be found on Saatchi Art. Over Labor Day Weekend 2018, Chris did his first show at the Woodstock New-Paltz Art Festival where he sold several pieces. In March 2019, he did his first exhibition as the Artist of the Month at a local restaurant in Nyack, NY.

Chris will be exhibiting at Art Basel SPECTRUM Miami during Miami Art Week in December of 2019. Currently, he is represented by the Piermont Flywheel Gallery in Piermont, NY. His work will be on display in Group Exhibitions throughout the year with a Solo Show scheduled for March 2020. He will be exhibiting again at the Woodstock New-Paltz Art Show over Labor Day Weekend – a 3-day fine art festival. Additionally, Chris’s work is being published in the inaugural edition of Art Folio Annual – a publication focused on the best in abstract and contemporary artwork. The publication is due out in the first quarter of 2020.
