Luis A. Gutierrez was born in Cali, Colombia, in 1990. When he was 13, his family moved to South Florida, where he began exploring art as a pastime. Soon after, it evolved into a more serious hobby. Luis, fueled by his passion for creativity, dove into his work and began training with artist and teacher Al Razza. He then attended Broward College, where his works were included in many student exhibitions. He was also chosen to create a 10′ x 12′ mural in Fort Lauderdale for Florida Atlantic University and Broward College.
Luis has been part of group exhibitions at private galleries and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. His most recent solo show, “Boats and Planes,” was held at Razza School of Art and Gallery in Coral Springs. He was also featured on Telemundo’s Con Estilo TV, and was recently selected as the semi-finalist for the 2016 Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series.
Of his inspiration and mission, Luis explains, “In today’s world we are constantly bombarded by advertisements, music, movies, and multimedia of all kinds. I am constantly questioning and observing the effects they have in our daily lives. It is these influences that make me want to stimulate the viewer in a more intellectual manner, with artwork that questions and provokes a meaningful response from them.”
He starts each piece by researching photographs and interviewing his models, then transforms that knowledge and imagery into a painting on canvas, using oil, acrylic, and enamel paints. “Then I pair the images with words to make a new vital statement,” Luis continues. “It is this pairing of elements that allows my thoughts and feelings to be seen on canvas, and becomes a personal statement of my experiences and reactions to so much overload.”
