Michelangelo Comes to Miami
You don’t need to travel to Florence to see Michelangelo’s “David” this winter—he’s heading to Miami! From December 4-8, Old Towne Gallery will be exhibiting original bronze sculptures by Michelangelo (yes, that Michelangelo) at SPECTRUM Miami in the Wynwood Art District.
Stop by the exhibition, and you’ll see original bronze models for famous works including The Louvre’s “Slave,” The Medici Tomb’s “River God,” and, of course, the immortal “David.” This will be first formal exhibit of these bronzes outside of a museum.
The Casa Buonaroti Home Museum in Florence, Italy recently decided to share these wonderful treasures with a small group of collectors and museums—and Old Towne Gallery was chosen. An edition of only eight of the six different models will be cast, and then the molds will be destroyed. Each bronze will be signed, numbered, and will bear the official museum seal. They’ll also come with a formal certificate of authenticity signed by Dr. Pina Ragionieri, Director of the Michelangelo Home Museum in Florence, Italy.
Though the original terra cottas are over five hundred years old, they look amazingly modern. This is because these were Michelangelo’s working models, created to refine the artist’s composition and anatomy. They were made quickly and with vigor, capturing the essence of the work on a small scale (usually nine to twenty four inches).
Most people do not know Michelangelo was a bronze sculptor himself. People tend to associate him with his famed marble carvings, but he actually cast at least two bronzes. Unfortunately, they didn’t survive.
The sculptures Old Towne will be showing are the only bronzes by Michelangelo available anywhere; there are no original Michelangelo sculptures outside of Europe and none in the U.S.—museums and private collections included. Good news for collectors: the sculptures will be priced with accessible introductory prices. Complete sets of six with matching numbers are available.
